Why do you ride?
I’ve always loved the freedom that cycling gives me. Since I started racing seriously, it
has brought me to all kinds of amazing friendships, places and experiences. And going
dangerously fast through pure physical force (and pain) feels amazing.
What is your best cycling memory?
One of my favorite experiences recently was July 2008 when I raced an entire week of
Superweek while tent camping by myself in Wisconsin. My favorite result was when I
returned to Superweek in 2009 and won the Lakefront Road Race (cat. 3) in Milwaukee
with a solo breakaway and with huge support from my teammates Geoff and Peter.
What is your most embarrassing cycling story?
In my early years of racing, I signed up for a 3-on-3 basketball tournament with some
friends. By the end of the day, I could barely walk and my legs were incredibly sore.
The problem was that I had also signed up for the Michigan time trial championship the
following day. The typical hour of pain for the 40 KM race turned into well over an hour
of leg-searing agony as I struggled to keep going forward. Lesson learned…don’t play
basketball during racing season.
I would never do that again:
I twice competed in the National 24-Hour Challenge, with my longest distance being 263
miles.
