Why do you ride?
For fitness, but also for my sanity. Cycling is the best stress relief therapy around. When I’m
done with a good ride nothing seems to bother me and although I can be exhausted, I’ll feel
totally refreshed.
What is your best cycling memory?
The first 3 mountain bike races I ever did. I didn’t know much about racing but thought it looked
fun. My 1st race I took 3rd at a time trial. Was told I wouldn’t do nearly that good at the next XC
race and then took 2nd. Then the 3rd race I took 1st. I was kind of addicted to racing after that but
success wasn’t ever that easy ever again.
What is your most embarrassing cycling story?
Embarrassing or act of stupidity?…. (I have many) In 1976 Evel Kneivel was to jump a pool
of Sharks in Chicago, he crashed in practice and it never happened. I decided later that I
would jump my little brother in his little blue swim pool to make up for Evel’s lack of bravery.
Unfortunately I was not an engineer and didn’t realize that the side of the blue pool would not
support the weight of my bike and I. As I barreled down the drive way I hit the ramp and the
side of the pool collapsed and I went sliding through the pool in a massive wreck. Miraculously
I missed my brother and he was unscathed. However I ended up with the end of the handle bar
(which was ragged sharp due to my declaration that kickstands were not cool) and it plugged into
my eye where I nearly lost my eyelid. The first cycling related stitches event of my life…..
